Zimbabwe May 2008 Carl's travel journal

Thursday May 8, 2:30am [750 miles from Dakar , Senegal]

I’m tired, but it is difficult to sleep on the plane. Other than that, I do like air travel and the time it affords one to mentally adjust to a new mode of existence away from home. It’s certainly nothing like the travel time by boat and I wonder if Hudson Taylor could conceive of a flight like this.

Dakar is on the very western tip of Africa and it will be interesting to see whether the leg from there to Johannesburg will be shorter or longer than our present one. Anyway, I started the morning of the 7th by getting up around 4:15am and don’t expect to reach our destination in Gweru until later in the day on the 9th, especially if we stop at the embassy that morning in Harare.

I’m sitting next to Aaron now who mentioned that perhaps our group’s theme music should be “The Magnificent Seven”. Not that we’re magnificient, but we trust God to be. It’s sort of a coincidence that I watched the “Kite Runner” on this leg…a good, powerful film. One thing that Amir and Hassan do when they are younger is to repeatedly go and see “The Magnificent Seven”…a time before innocence and friendships are broken.

Waiting for a connecting flight (Claudio, Aaron, and Steve)

Claudio took this shot out his window
