Friday May 9, 1:00pm [ U.S. Embassy, Harare , Zimbabwe ]

Fanny and Justin drove us to the U.S. Embassy where we went through a series of checkpoints to get in and register ourselves. I guess we could have done it online before arriving and that would have been simpler rather than doing the paper forms in person. I checked all the boxes about who to release my name to: Federal U.S. representatives, media, family, friends… I don’t know what circumstances this release was for, but I thought in case it was my death, then I should go out with a bang. Also, we worked on an affidavid to tell the airline to release the missing luggage into the care of Isaac (Fanny’s other brother) since we weren’t going to stick around in Harare forever. But the embassy would not witness/notorize it unless we gave them $30 U.S. They told us to take it to any attorney so that is what Rick and Melissa did while we waited outside the embassy. So I had a little time to write until ants started crawling on me and biting.

Outside the U.S. embassy building. Irene and Claudio chat while Aaron waits for his sweat to dry off in the breeze.

We watched a tire roll/fall off a car as it was going down the street and it rolled some distance before coming to rest. Someone chased it down and I guess got it put back on the vehicle because the next time I looked up, both the vehicle and tire were gone. Rick and Melissa returned successfully so we are ready to begin our journey from the capital.

Just one of the many gas stations in Zimbabwe that has no fuel available. We tried stopping here with no luck.
