| Saturday May 10, 12:30pm [ Gweru, Zimbabwe ] |

The power came back on at some point and I took a bath before going to bed because Fanny was able to get the water tank filled once the pump had power. I went to bed around 1am, and did not bother with mosquito netting. It would have been a job trying to figure out how to string that up, and there was really no need in Gweru, since it is already cooler there – I guess winter comes to Gweru before the rest of the country. Justin had turned in hours before, and in the morning, he turned on the light entirely too early :-)
We had some breakfast around 7:30. Breakfasts are great here. There is instant coffee ( Ricoffee), which is really good, or superb tea with cream and sugar as well. |
Sometimes we have a coffee/tea time later in the day as well – which is a real treat. Also at breakfast are crackers, biscuits, homemade bread, peanut butter, fruit, and sometimes eggs and ham.
At 8, the kids were still arriving for VBS and continued to arrive for the rest of the morning. But there was already the anticipated 90 by 9am. For the first session, after Steve had the Bible story, Claudio and I took the 1st through 3rd graders back to the filled-in swimming pool to play “Gideon Recruits His Army”. I tried to explain the game to the kids with Claudio demonstrating. It took them a while to catch on, but eventually with the help of English-speaking Sunday school teachers, we had a long chain of bodies chasing the remaining children. We only had time for one game before we were told to meet back at the church. Meanwhile, Aaron was playing Gideon in the Bible Expedition segment with some older kids, and others were handling different activities (Melissa had the preschoolers).
We then switched and took the 4-7 graders for the Daniel segment. Claudio and Rick oversaw that game while I shambled around trying to get video…of King Aaron attempting to burn the three Hebrews. |

They fed all the kids both a snack (mid-morning) and lunch. By lunch time, there were around 150 kids, and all were served sadza. Sadza is their staple, more so than rice or anything else. It is made from white corn (maize) meal – sort of a white grits or very stiff cream of wheat. It was being boiled in the back over an open flame, and sometimes it takes two women to stir the pot of thick porridge. All the smoke overcame those in our group who tried their hand at stirring. Another impressive thing besides feeding all the kids was the dishwashing brigade that went on under an outside hydrant so that the next wave of kids would have something to eat on.
