Sunday May 11, 10:00pm [ Gweru , Zimbabwe ]

In the afternoon, I went with Fanny, Steve, and Melissa to Mkoba church for the youth gathering. There was to be several Gweru churches represented there. Also riding with us was Mark and other youth we came across along the way there. We usually try to travel with as many people as possible. When we arrived, the youth did a bunch of singing at the beginning of the session. This was fun to see and the “choir” did a number that was really beautiful to hear. One of the women is really talented in leading and working with the choir, so it was obvious they had put considerable time into practicing.

The youth cut loose at Mkoba before the teaching session

I spoke on servant leadership and used the whiteboard that we brought along from Fanny’s. That worked pretty well as I was able to use a floor speaker as a podium and move around somewhat. In fact I had to walk back and forth into the audience quite a bit when the kids were answering questions because I had so much trouble understanding their responses. They spoke very good English, I was just very unaccustomed to their accent and manner of speech, so I had to ask for things to be repeated a lot. But I made it through and it was pretty interactive like I wanted. I was able to tell some of my background story and was led to stress the importance of waiting on God when it comes to relationships, like anything else. I also passed out index cards to all of them and gave them the opportunity to write prayer requests on them before turning them back in. Almost everyone filled these out, so I have dozens of cards from Gweru youth. My heart was burdened with comments that Logic made yesterday about many more youth wanting to come, but transportation was the issue. Rates went up again dramatically this weekend, but I could not do much about it except pray.

Melissa briefly told some about herself and testimony. Steve also shared some closing comments. By then it was 5 and we spent a little time visiting before heading back to Fanny’s. On the way home, I was able to talk some with Mark about my job in the U.S. and other related things. Mark is interested in architecture, while Simba is still considering coming to Crossroads to begin his college education in the U.S. in a few years. He still has a few years of high school though.

While we were gone, the Harare Christian Choir stopped by Fanny & Martha's as part of their choir tour. They did a few songs right in the house.

Also, while we were gone to Mkoba, all the bags our team brought with us containing supplies and gifts for the mission were opened and sorted through. The items were organized and piled in the living room. How happy we were to be able to bring the church materials, medical supplies, cloth, personal gifts, etc. with us in our luggage. We also had our team devotions in the evening from I Timothy. We also shared about what impressed us most about the day.

Little Joshua became quite taken with photography and especially using Claudio's camera to take dozens (if not hundreds) of pictures. They didn't all turn out, but he certainly has a "gift", so check out the following link.
