Tuesday May 13, 10:30pm [ Bulawayo to Gweru, Zimbabwe ]

7:30pm - Just met some nice people at a “bakery” we stopped at in Bulawayo …next to the Chicken Inn and the Creamy Inn. Bakeries in these parts just have meat pies and cal-zones, not sweet pastries like we think of. We are still making our way back to Gweru.

Storefronts in Bulawayo - still some business going on.

Stopped in Bulawayo for some refreshment. Not much to choose from but at least the 2nd largest city has Fanta for a few hundred million $$

The hot African sun gives way to chilly night air soon after 6pm here. But actually the air is only chilly when we’re in the car doing 110 km/hr. Otherwise it is quite pleasant for Minnesotans. We need to keep the windows down because of all the gasoline fumes that threaten to overpower us. But the fuel is worth a few headaches, and I’m actually feeling pretty good. Melissa has a headache and also an upset stomach after lunch, but isn’t doing any worse, so that is good. We just rolled the windows up for a short time while passing a cement factory because of the dust, and I wonder what is left in Zimbabwe: at least chicken, Fanta, and cement I guess. But it does have a beautiful night sky…the bright moon is out, and some in the car just saw a bright shooting star. Although we did not have to pay duty on the goods, the duty on the fuel was $8 billion. It keeps going up so that is one area where the government continues to squeeze.

10:30 - We made it back to Gweru after 9pm Tuesday evening. And there was much rejoicing! We spread all the stuff we had brought out in the living room, and of course they had a late supper waiting for us. I had missed two evenings of Bible study and seminars. The others covered for Claudio and it was suggested that Rick could cover for me Wednesday evening to give me preparation time for Thursday’s talk at Senga. Also while we were gone, the rest of the team finished scraping and preparing the rooms.

The tired crew is back in Gweru with our goods unloaded.
