Thursday May 15, 11:00pm [Gweru , Zimbabwe ]

At Antelope Park this afternoon, we met up with another American family living in Gweru, whom the rest of the team met while some of us were away in Botswana. We had to decide what we were going to do because there were a whole list of activities we could sign up for. Fanny wondered if we were interested in doing the “Walk with Lions”, but it was $45 to do whatever this was and you couldn’t even take your own pictures. We all opted instead for the “game drive” which was cheaper at $20 a piece. But that did not start until 4pm so in the meantime, we had tea, and toured the various lodges that families could rent. As you can see from the pictures, they were great places to stay.

The game drive took place in a park vehicle where you sit pretty high up in the open air. I sat on the back bench with Rick and Aaron so I couldn’t hear the guide that well, but I could get better pictures in back. It was really cool. I’ve never done something like that before and seeing herds of all these different kinds of animals that one normally does not see was pretty exciting. There were zebras, impalas, kudus, wildebeests, giraffes, and others.

This elephant is actually chained up, but you would probably have believed me if I said it was in the wild.

This sweet shot was actually taken from the car window driving into the park. The camera auto-focused on the grass inadverdently.

The largest type of antelope here and a nice male specimin. I forget the spieces name.

Wildebeests and Impala I believe

Steve speaks at Senga.

Even though we cut the game drive short, we still were not able to make the service at Town church, and those of us going to Senga were late after changing and grabbing our stuff back at the house. I went with Steve and Fanny, who picked up some others on the way. In order not to prolong the service too late, we decided that only Steve would speak that evening instead of both of us as scheduled. I think that worked for the best, though I was kind of psyched up to give my lesson. But I would not have done so great with the translator and there was no power there either, just candles were available so it was pretty dark. Steve spoke on prayer, giving a practical guide that one can use in your own devotion time.

Another joyous evening

Newly added:

I forgot to add the account of tooth pulling while I was gone to Senga. Apparently, Claudio was having dental problems go from bad to worse over the course of the week. One of his teeth cracked and there was a loose part of the tooth that was quite "wiggleable". He wanted to go to a dentist in Zimbabwe because he knew the dentists in Mozambique (where he is headed next) would be even more woefully ill-equipped. But Fanny and Martha strongly encouraged him not to see a Zimbabwean dentist. So while Steve and I were at Senga, Aaron was called upon for his dentistry skills while Rick held Claudio's head back in a chair. Aaron came in with a pliers...well, actually he decided that a tweezers might be enough of a tool to do the trick. First yank! Nothing. Second yank - got it. The team is back in business and no one is going for medical attention ;-) Sorry no video of this either.
